La questione carceraria
Il ghetto sta tra le mura della città
e le mura del carcere. La geografia
urbana ne disegna i confini, la sto-
ria ne determina i significati nega-
tivi. Come le acque pensili hanno
bisogno di argini alti, così il pen-
siero ebraico deve alzarne il livello:
del senso. Le mura del carcere, ora,
non dovranno più chiudere né im-
prigionare, ma aprire e liberare.

l’orizzonte fisico del progetto. Le
mappe dell’idrografia storica, le
matrici originarie della forma ur-
bana.

I codici linguistici del pensiero
ebraico, profondamente diversi da
quelli della tradizione greco-cri-
stiana (il tempo sostituisce lo spa-
zio, l’assenza la presenza, l’evento
l’eterno), rimandano all’immagine
tanakica
. I fiumi biblici si sovrap-
pongono all’iconografia ferrarese;

merge l’intimità dell’immagine.

If you wish to single out the Jewish
contribution in the history of
Ferrara,
you
easily
risk
misrepresenting the principles of
Judaism and the importance of the
contribution. Historically, Jewish
culture remains almost invisible
within the city environments, yet it
is part of the forces that shaped it;
for example, the Herculanean
Addition undertaken under the
Estes.

The Ferrara issue
Ferrara is a city of water, surrounded
by swamps and lagoons, beset by
fears of the Po River flooding. The
conquest over the land (the Sadeh
(fields) in the Torah, Genesis 2,5) is
the struggle between misery and
poverty, between epic and tragedy.
Therefore, water (a metaphor for
the Hebrew word Davar) is at the
origins of Ferrara.

The prison issue
The ghetto lies between the walls
of the city and the walls of the jail.
Urban geography draws its
boundaries, its history the negative
associations. Like walls of water
need high banks, so the Jewish
mind must raise the level of the
senses. The walls of the jail, today,
no longer close to imprison, but
open and liberate.

The walls of Ferrara define the
horizontal aspect of the project.

the Greco-Christian tradition (time
replaces space, absence replaces
presence, and the event replaces
the eternal) recall images from the
Tanakh

Voler distinguere il contributo
ebraico nella storia di Ferrara signi-
fica facilmente contraddirne i prin-
cipi e ridurne i valori. Storicamente
la cultura ebraica rimane presso-
ché invisibile nell’ambito delle città,
pur essendo parte di quelle stesse
forze plasmatrici. Un esempio evi-
dente: l’Addizione Erculea attuata
dagli Este.

La questione ferrarese
Ferrara era città d’acqua, circon-
data da paludi e lagune, assediata
dall’incubo delle esondazioni del
Po. La conquista dell’asciutto (il Sa-
deh della Torah, Gen 2,5) è lotta tra
miseria e povertà, tra epica e tra-
gedia. Comunque l’acqua (meta-
fora della parola ebraica,
Davar
) è
all’origine di Ferrara.
