sua presenza, ma preferisce espri-
mersi con volumetrie composte e
frazionate, ed altezze degradanti
verso i fronti edilizi degli edifici
recuperati. Un edificio che si pre-
senta come il manifesto program-
matico del Museo: libri sacri e let-
tere dell’alfabeto che alludono a
parole di dialogo, di accoglienza,
di tolleranza.
Se misura ed equilibrio sembrano
parole-chiave appropriate a que-
sto progetto, forte e dirompente è
invece il secondo classificato,
quello del gruppo Ove Arup &
Partners, tutto centrato sulla
drammatica interpretazione del
fabbricato dell’ex carcere, trasfor-
mato in occasione architettonica
per vani-vetrina e percorsi espe-
rienziali che lasciano quasi senza
respiro. Questa proposta emana il
fascino di una originalità voluta-
mente ambigua, in netta antitesi
anche con il terzo classificato. Il
gruppo Politecnica definisce,
infatti, la sua proposta attraverso
un manto simbolico, di poetica
suggestione, che ricopre i volumi
e si sparge nelle aree a giardino
sfrangiandosi in lettere-scultura.
Dalla pensilina d’ingresso, che
diventa logo, alla copertura del
nuovo corpo di fabbrica esposi-
tivo, il manto è un drappo dorato
unificante.
Molto diversi tra loro nell’imposta-
zione e nel linguaggio, i tre pro-
getti hanno animato una disamina
profonda e meditata di una giuria
che ha lavorato senza pregiudizi,
con genuina curiosità, con inte-
resse e concordia.
The appreciation shown by the jury
in awarding the first prize to the
group Arco fully matches the
willingness of the client to achieve
a completely new architecture in
Ferrara, one that is able to set the
museum project within the
pre-existing penitentiary complex.
Transparency
and
solidity,
symbolism, a versatile arrangement
of volumes and paths characterize
the
project
giving
new
significance, without either
exalting or mortifying it, to the
massive block of pre-existing
buildings that stretch towards the
walls. The theme is treated with a
light and clever touch, which also
shows respect for the immediate
urban surroundings which, even
though some are newly built, are
in direct contact with the medieval
city. This is a building that doesn’t
shout its presence, but prefers to
express itself through units made
up and divided, with heights that
slope down towards the building
fronts of the restored buildings.
A building that presents itself like
a manifestation of the Museum:

If measure and balance seem to be
the key words appropriate to this
project, powerful and shattering
are those for the second place
project, by the group Ove Arup
& Partners, with its dramatic
interpretation for the ex-
penitentiary complex transformed
into an architectural display of
showcase rooms and experiential
paths which almost leaves you
breathless. This proposal radiates
with the charm of an originality
that is deliberately ambiguous, and
is in sharp contrast also to the third
place winner. The group Politecnica
uses the image of a cloak,
evocative of poetry and symbolism,
that covers the buildings and
spreads over the gardens in ragged
letter-sculptures.
From
the
entrance canopy, which becomes
logo, to the roof of the new display
block, the cloak is a unifying cloth
of gold.
Very different in setting and
language, the three projects have
inspired the jury to a deep and
thoughtful examination, to working
together without prejudice, with
genuine curiosity, with interest and
in harmony.

L’apprezzamento mostrato dalla
giuria con l’attribuzione del primo
premio al gruppo Arco corri-
sponde in pieno alla volontà del
committente di realizzare per Fer-
rara una architettura del tutto
nuova, ma capace di coinvolgere
nell’avventura museale una parte
del preesistente complesso carce-
rario. Trasparenze e solidità, ele-
menti simbolici, matrice dei
volumi e versatili percorsi caratte-
rizzano il progetto che sa risignifi-
care – senza esaltarlo né mortifi-
carlo – anche il massiccio corpo di
fabbrica preesistente proteso
verso le mura. Il tema è trattato
con un tocco leggero e sensibile,
che mostra rispetto anche per
quell’immediato contesto urbano
minuto che, pur in parte di
recente formazione, introduce al
diretto contatto con la città medie-
