In summer, the cicada nymphs, after spending several years underground as larvae, emerge from the soil and grasp onto solid supports in order to take their last step towards the adult stage of their life cycle. In so doing, they leave behind the abandoned exoskeletons of their larval stage. Photograph by Giulia Finotti.
